Russell and David Interview

And again, I must say, I can't stop really being fond of Russell T. Davies. Yes, I know...I was very angry about Torchwood. But that's...Torchwood. When he talks about the Doctor...he's speaking my language. I get all weepy at the end of this interview, when he says he feels vindicated by Doctor Who proving to be as brilliant as he always knew it was. Because that's exactly how I feel about the New Who success. Suddenly I am not alone in my obsession about this weird Time Lord and his police box. Other Americans know who I'm talking about and kids love the show.

Yes, Old Who was laughable at times. I took my shots at the actors in plastic trash bags and the Silurians with their tighty-whities showing through improperly fastened rubber costumes. But, I, too, experienced the pain of people who laughed because they refused to look beyond the very low budget to the very grand concept of it all. As with RTD, to me, Doctor Who was always just waiting for the right budget to explode onto the world stage.

RTD, DT, JG...and the rest...are like my nerd-family in storytelling. Right down to keep the spoilers away, because it ruins the fun of it all. And I so hope that I am as thrilled with the finale as they seem to be. I really...REALLY hope that they restore my faith in them and in the Doctor.

My inner Spike fangirl is squeeing because David said "effulgent" as if it were a perfectly ordinary word. Hee!

Aw, that's a great interview!

And I feel the same as you. American Doctor Who fans, up to this point, were pretty much a fringe group. I think there were a lot more of us out there than the world knew - I mean, just look at how shocked RTD, DT & co were to find that the "Doctor Who is unknown in America" saw just wasn't true! Now if I can just manage to convince them that the whole "girls didn't watch Doctor Who" bit was just as untrue, I'll be a happy woman. ;)

I always loved DW, wobbly sets, green spray-painted bubblewrap costumes and all. I think they did an amazing job given the absolute lack of budget. I believe that a big part of the success of the relaunch was that it was created by people who were fans of the original show and knew how great it was and could be (as RTD says here).

Spoilers are a horrible temptation for me. I am one of those people who loves to know every tiny detail and can't wait to know it! But I've been burned by knowing too much, too. Russell is totally right - there is no way to get back the experience of seeing something for the first time and knowing nothing about it so all the revelations, jokes, etc. have their full impact. I think I need SA - Spoilers Anonymous!

True. There were definitely a lot more of us out there that watched Who than he realizes.

I hated his quote about how 'girls didn't watch Who' (because I'm a girl and watched Doctor Who as a kid thus disproving his ridiculously misinformed statement).

I have such fond memories of staying up late on Saturday nights as a kid watching Doctor Who. It's nice to see the show get some respect now.
